ABSTRACT

Fishes obtained from Iyede-Ame River were investigated for trace elements concentrations using atomic absorption spectrophotometry of model PYE UNICAM SP 2900.  The trace metals analysed were arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead and selenium.  The result obtained revealed that all the aforementioned trace elements detected and their concentrations varied significant (P< 0.05).  Trace elements such as barium, cadmium, lead and selenium were found to have elevated concentrations when compared with the
W.H.O. fresh water standard for fishing.  On the other hand, arsenic and chromium concentrations were within the above set standard.  Trace elements concentrations in this study were compared with other similar research carried out by scientists.  These fishes studied are good indicators for pollution monitoring in Nigerian rivers.
