ABSTRACT

Garcinia kola is used in ethnomedicine for the  treatment of  a plothera of diseases such as cough, bacteria infections and sexually tramsittted diseases. This biological activity necessitated this present study in order to justify its claimed traditional usage. Crude extract  of the plant and its fractions were obtained by solvent partitioning, desolvated and subjected to phytochemical screening and chromatographic profiling. The fractions of the  stem and rootbark of the plant were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against some pathogenic organism such E. coli, S. aereus, C. albicans, Klebsiella spp and Samonella spp. The result of the study revealed the presence of some secondary metabolities in the plant parts. The rootbark (MIC, 538mg/ml). The antimicrobial activity of the root and stem bark of G. Kola lends support to the traditional usage of the plant.
