ABSTRACT
During the period of mixed
dentition, the dental age is assessed on the basis of erupted teeth
present, the amount of resorption at the roots of the deciduous teeth,
and the amount of development and presence of permanent teeth. Eruption
is the movement of a tooth through the jaw tissue into the oral cavity.
This study tends to determine the eruption time of permanent mandibular
central incisor and relate it to gender as well as both sides o the
mandible in a Nigerian population. Intra-oral examinations were
conducted under natural illumination and only children who just erupted
the permanent mandibular central incisor(s) were included in the study.
Four hundred and eighty-five children (250 boys and 235 girls) were
found suitable for the study. Four hundred and ninety-seven teeth were
erupted; 41.0% of which were at 6years, 38.1% at 7 years,9.5% at 5
years and 11.1% at 8 years. 6 years and 7 years were the common age of
eruption of the permanent mandibular central Incisors. The erupted teeth
occurred symmetrically on both sides of the mandible with no gender
dichotomy. This may be useful in dental practice, forensic dentistry and
anthropology.
